Intactivists Making the Cut of the New York Times

Even if it the the Reuters' feed, the anti-circ groups are taking a slice out of pro-cutting community's strangle hold on the media. (Photo from Jew-ish)

This is from the article and gets to the core of the real issue at (or in) hand.
Circumcision's detractors also claim the procedure reduces sexual sensation and endurance.

"I haven't attempted foreskin restoration surgery, but I've thought about it," said Matthew Taylor, an active Bay Area Jew who resents his own circumcision and who preaches on the evils of the practice to Jewish friends .

But author Julius Lester, who became a Reform convert to Judaism in 1982 and underwent circumcision to feel Jewish, said the procedure also boosted his sex life.

"Circumcised there are far more subtle sensations, and staying power is much, much longer," he said. "From a sexual point of view, I wish I'd gotten circumcised many years earlier."
What will we do? To cut or not to cut? Will this fad pass just like MySpace and Pogs or is this here to stay? I really think we have to put our thinking caps on for this one and look at the nature of our Jewish understanding.

It's here to stay...the anti-circ movement grew as the internet grew, because information on the downside of circumcision is was not presented in hospitals, where it is a very profitable procedure.
With circumcision, the more we know, the worse it gets.

Except for that whole "may decrease the likelihood of getting/spreading HIV/AIDS."

I know that it is still a questionable proof, but if it turns out to be true, can we afford to not circumcise?

It won't turn out to be true. Everyone says condoms are more effective. Everyone. Just as you don't amputate a finger when you can wear gloves...

My post was supposed to be funny (and I think it was) but the reality is that this is a fad. And like all fads it will have an impact on behavior but will not last. There will be left over believers (or non-believers depending on how you look at it) but this will fade back into a small sect of the population.

One day, if humanity survives, circumcision will itself be looked upon as a fad, and small, scattered, surviving indigenous communities will be the only ones who practice it -- in the northeast of Somalia, a few fanatical sects in B'nai Brak, and every fucking Muslim.

Interestingly, the cut foreskin is being constructively used in skin reparation/restoration surgery for people who have been [badly] burned. So, I say "Go for circumcision! The younger, the better". :)

More likely circumcision is a fad that will fade into obscurity. Circumcision rates all over the world are dropping, including among Jewish populations.

The ends don't justify the means. The foreskins were taken from minors who didn't authorize to have tissue amputated from their genitals. You don't forcibly take organs from those who weren't willing organ donors. There are other tissue sources for burn victims. Stealing tissue from a baby's penis is not the way.
