Cutting Back on Words

Freedom of Expression is an important aspect of the First Amendment of the Constitution. It kinda is the whole point of the thing. So I find it funny that a group of honors students were suspended after using the correct term for a part of their anatomy. Vagina, not va jay jay or cunt or pussy, but vagina has landed these girls, 16 year-olds Megan Reback, Elan Stahl and Hannah Levinson at home for a few days.

“The suspension has prompted allegations of censorship. But Principal Richard Leprine said Tuesday that the girls were punished not because of what they said but because they disobeyed orders not to say it.”

So how is that not exactly the same thing? When in high school I disobey orders not to say a particular word in a school play. It was met by laughter and by disappointment by my teachers. They got over it. Additionally what about the dress code of the folks at this school? I am willing to bet that they are wearing clothing that is less than PC but they can't say Vagina in a play?

We are supposed to be free to express ourselves in this country. Men and women of all ages colors and creed and religions, should be able to say and do what they want as long as they aren’t hurting anyone else. Schools are not a place to be shut down by authority; they are a place of learning. Principal Richard Leprine should be ashamed of himself.
